Justice Delayed, Justice Denied
The failure to prosecute trump for January 6th EXPOSED how stalling for time and having enough money can trump the law.
I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know much about the nitty gritty of the law. But I know that we have laws, and we enforce those laws, because if we don't, we'll have chaos. If there's no accountability for crimes committed, what's to stop the perpetrators from doing it again?
That is, you know, the standard of law that is applied to those of us with the net worth under one billion dollars without political connections.
But a big thing I didn't know was if you could DELAY that accountability long enough, you could get away with ANYTHING.
Four years ago, we came THISCLOSE to losing our democracy, this grand experiment almost came to a crashing halt in a cloud of pepper spray, blood, and broken glass.
We watched aghast, mouths agape, as rabid MAGA rioters clashed with Capitol Police, battering them with fists, flag poles, and fire extinguishers, all in the name of overturning the 2020 election, which trump lost handily. It wasn't close; he lost by 7 million votes.
And yet, this nation's Commander in Chief stoked the rage that erupted on January 6, 2021. Not only that, he invited them all to the Capitol on that day, of all days, during which the election was to be certified. "Will be wild," he tweeted.
And as the horror unfolded, he watched gleefully for 187 minutes, reluctant to do anything about it, even as his closest influencers like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and others implored Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to get trump to intervene. "This is hurting all of us," Laura Ingraham wrote.
Even the frequently-unhinged Don Jr was a desperate voice of reason, begging Meadows "He’s got to condem this shit. Asap. The captiol police tweet is not enough."
When it was all over, the rioters had injured dozens of police officers, and several Capitol Police officers lost their lives. In a strange scene of bipartisan agreement, lawmakers on BOTH sides of the aisle condemned trump's words, as well as his inaction.
“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters,” Kevin McCarthy said, even as he opposed impeachment.
"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day," said Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, even after casting his vote to acquit trump in the impeachment trial.
And so, the WORST attack on a government facility since 1814 resulted in no arrest, no indictment, no conviction of the main ringleader, the Inciter in Chief.
But not to worry, they said. They assured us that we could always hold him accountable in the courts. Except when it came time for that, they screamed "WEAPONIZATION" and "LAW FARE!!!"
We have a Constitutional Amendment (Amendment 14, section 3) forbidding people who wage insurrection against the United States from seeking office. He should NOT have even been permitted to run for office. But our Supreme Court is stupidly broken, and pro-MAGA, so they ruled against that.
Think about that: The Supreme Court has ONE job, and that's to interpret the Constitution so that our existing laws protect our way of life, and they ruled that it was OK that a sore loser wanted to disenfranchise the will of the people.
U.S. Attorney Merrick Garland was now tasked with bringing the January 6th offenders to justice, although now in retrospect he seemed better equipped to replace Mister Rogers in Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood than to bring these violent attackers, and their ringleaders, to justice.
Garland's glacial pace, we were told, was intentionally to disabuse critics of the notion of politicization, as well as to use the smaller fish to help build a bigger case against the biggest fish. But that was bullshit; they had more than enough to prosecute trump, and should have pressed earlier.
Slowly but surely, dozens and then hundreds of January 6th offenders were arrested, indicted, and convicted for a variety of offenses ranging from trespassing to insurrection and attempted murder. But the electoral clock of 2024 was ticking, and we were no closer to indicting trump.
FINALLY, on August 1, 2023, trump was indicted on felony charges for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election, but now the calendar and courts were in his favor, as he was able to exhaust all kinds of procedural challenges to delay the game, and run out the clock.
Now, here we are: trump has been re-elected, amid plenty of sketchy, questionable things happening, but the peaceful transfer of power is well underway as VP Kamala Harris just presided over the certification of her own loss.
The question I have now, though, is this: Is it REALLY a peaceful transfer of power, if the guy who should NOT have even been allowed to run for office again was magically protected from accountability, in spite of overwhelming evidence, our own laws, and our Constitution? Was he not thrust upon us?
Our lawmakers refused to hold him accountable.
Our Supreme Court refused to hold him accountable.
Our Attorney General failed to hold him accountable.
The justice we deserved to see, holding trump accountable for January 6th, was delayed long enough by his money, we were DENIED the sight of him being led away in handcuffs like the common criminal he is. Instead, we get to see him pardon January 6th thugs who smeared shit on our walls and beat cops.
That ought to be a crime.
Instead of Trump paying the price for grievous crimes, he got *rewarded* for them! Pat him on the back - great job bucking the law, Trump! Great job the GOP did when they collectively shouted, 'he won he won' as they looked down at their shoes, knowing in their darkest recesses of their souls, that they were unmitigated LIARS, allowing the dangerous Liar to continue his malice.
Now the pain is inflicted on all the good souls of America - we obey the law because that is what honorable people do!
A pox on the Trump administration, when I see or hear his face or voice, I turn it off. Watching raindrops fall from the skies has more eloquence and goodness than Donald Trump and his hateful fans do.
Great job Brooklyn Dad!
Despite our laws, a foreign born immigrant, said to have violated his visa from day 1 of his arrival, was allowed to buy this election with 260 million dollars. I understand that, as an individual, I am only allowed to contribute $5000 to a campaign. Not that I have 250 million, let alone a million. None-the-less, Musk used his 260 million to lie to people, unchecked. That had to have some effect.
I agree with everything you said. The liar-in-chief got away with his coup and was rewarded. We the people lost.
