Trump’s Voters Are About to Get a Rude Awakening
The Face-Eating Leopard Doesn’t Care Who You Voted For
We are living in the "First They Came" days.
I went most of my life not having heard that deeply poignant poem by Martin Niemöller, a sharp criticism of apathetic Germans who did nothing while the Holocaust happened right in front of their apathetic, uninvolved eyes.
I finally heard people make reference to the poem during trump's first time in office, probably around the time he was trying to pass his Muslim ban. Or maybe it was when his child separation policy literally ripped babies out of their mothers' arms. It could have been any number of horrible trumpian acts.
Folks were using it pretty liberally on Twitter to criticize the trump administration, although some would criticize them for being hyperbolic. It’s easy to tell someone to calm the fuck down if you don’t have skin in the game, if you don’t have a loved one who might be adversely affected.
But I guess that was the whole point of the poem, wasn’t it—to call out those who sat by on the sidelines while a horrific event unfolded right in front of them.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
