From Idiocracy to The Running Man: trump's Dystopian America

How trump’s chaos mimics the scariest sci-fi and horror films

I love watching movies, always have.

Mostly, it’s the escapism: turn off my brain for a few hours and get whisked into alternate realities with superheroes, gangsters, space aliens, monsters, or brain-munching zombies.

It hit me recently, after watching Weapons—a killer film with a stellar cast about a classroom of kids vanishing—how much I dig a good horror movie. Highly recommend it. Horror flicks are like roller coasters: that slow, gut-churning buildup where you know something’s coming, then you hit the peak, plunge, and scream your damn head off.

Exhilarating! You saw the folks ahead of you, maybe rode a dozen coasters before, but it’s that mix of feeling safe—those metal bars lock you in tight—and the raw fear that, at this speed, shit could go sideways fast.

I maintain that the Cyclone, in Coney Island, is the scariest roller coaster around because it was built in 1927 (a year before sliced bread was invented), and that shit is made of WOOD, and you can hear each of those rickety boards moving as the car rolls over it, and you imagine it just falling off the damn tracks when you need it.

Right now, America feels less like a roller coaster and more like a horror movie where you’re in the damn thing, screaming at the characters not to open that door because the orange-faced monster’s waiting to take everything. But you’re also in the audience, popcorn in hand, watching it unfold in slow motion.

I’m not going to dwell on it too much in this article, but for crying out loud, WE WARNED THEM. All of the horrible things happening to a lot of the people who voted for trump, we warned those jackasses.

We’re starring in a dystopian flick where a cascade of screw-ups—some preventable, some not—turns civilization into a wasteland. No Starbucks, no running water, no electricity, just roving gangs ready to steal your food or make you the main course. Think The Handmaid’s Tale (yeah, not a movie, roll with me), where fanatical Christian Nationalists turned women into baby-makers, maids, or wives with zero say.

The parallels are screaming at us: abortion rights got gutted by the 2022 Dobbs decision, Christian nationalism’s surging—look at the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 pushing theocratic policies—and trump’s militarizing liberal cities like DC, where he sent 2,000 National Guard troops in August 2025, claiming a “public safety emergency” despite crime dropping 12% in 2024, per the US Attorney’s Office.

So, what’s the deal? With 300 million Americans, surely we’d rise up against this fascist jackass, right? Nope. Half the country’s stuck in a Night of the Living Dead zombie algorithm, stumbling around, heads buried in phones. It’s not “brrraaainns” they’re after—it’s likes, retweets, and reality TV.

And who kickstarted that brain-rot culture? trump, the reality TV star turned dictator wannabe, lulling millions into a stupor while he deploys ICE and National Guard like Darth Vader sending stormtroopers to crush protests. In Portland, October 2025 saw federal troops spark clashes just by showing up, per CNN reports.

This is They Live territory. Picture Roddy Piper slipping on those sunglasses, revealing aliens running the show with billboards flashing “OBEY” and “CONSUME.” Today, it’s social media algorithms and Fox News-style propaganda blinding us to trump’s power grab. Half the population’s too distracted by TikTok trends or buying crap to notice their freedoms slipping away.

Then there’s Idiocracy—supposedly a comedy, but it’s basically a documentary now. Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph wake up 500 years later to a world where the smartest guy has a double-digit IQ. Sound familiar? Anti-vaxxers like RFK Jr., now influencing health policy, are making vaccine skepticism cool again, setting us up for a real-world apocalypse. It’s laughable until you realize the stakes are deadly.

I rewatched The Running Man recently, that cheesy Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi flick where he’s framed by the military, aided by a Fox News-style AI hit piece, and forced into a deadly American Gladiator-style show to survive. He teams up with rebels to “break the signal” and expose the Deep State’s lies. Sound like a stretch? Not when trump’s DOJ is pushing “reconfigured” crime stats to justify troops in DC, as Karoline Leavitt admitted in August 2025.

Here’s the kicker: nobody’s coming to save us. We’re on our couches, munching popcorn, watching ICE raids hit immigrants, farmers lose land, workers get fired—thinking it’s someone else’s horror show. But it’ll hit us eventually; it always does. This isn’t a roller coaster you can hop off. It’s a fight to save democracy.

How? Break the signal. Wake people up. Share the truth—post about these issues, join local advocacy groups like Indivisible, or vote in every election, from school boards to midterms. There’s a “No Kings” protest scheduled all over the country for October 18th, make a sign and join in. Get loud. If we don’t, we’re handing the orange-faced monster the keys to our future.
